Inauguré en 1880 sur la place de l'Hôtel de Ville, le monument porte sur son piédestal une célèbre inscription tirée de ses lettres écrites aux habitants : « Je yray voir mes bons amys de Compiegne ». La statue et sa grille décorative en fer forgé ont miraculeusement survécu aux bombardements intenses des deux guerres mondiales qui ont pourtant dévasté les bâtiments médiévaux situés immédiatement derrière elle.
